“I want to help people to feel empowered to make a positive difference to this generation and future generations.”
My name is Amanda Prior. I was born and grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney. I always felt lucky living there because I was surrounded by beautiful environments such as the Nepean river and the Blue Mountains which I liked to explore any time I had the chance. I discovered my love of natural environments and ecosystems through bush walking in the Blue Mountains, and it is a love I have carried with me throughout my life.
Growing up so far from the ocean meant that opportunities to go to the beach were rare and to be savoured. We would usually go for a family weekend to the South Coast about once a year where we spent time in the bush, and at the beach. My love for the ocean was sparked on the South Coast.
As an adult, I have always lived on the South Coast in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas. I have a Masters in Marine Science and Management and I work in the field of Fisheries Management.
I have been fortunate enough to participate in field research on giant mantas and whale sharks off the coast of Mozambique, I have worked as a snorkel tour guide in the Great Barrier Reef, and have volunteered with organisations such as ORRCA Marine Mammal Rescue and Ban The Bag Illawarra.
I am passionate about protecting and conserving natural environments and ecosystems so that future generations can enjoy a quality of life that is currently at risk. I am particularly passionate about protecting our ocean ecosystems not just because of their innate beauty, but because we rely on a healthy ocean for healthy human life. I want to be part of a solution to global negative effects of ocean acidification and climate change. I want to raise awareness about important issues such as plastics in the ocean and the damage caused by shark mitigation programs. And most importantly, I want to help people to feel empowered to make a positive difference to this generation and future generations.
I’m excited to be a Young Sustainability Ambassador because it is an opportunity to be part of something bigger. It will give me the opportunity to connect with more people in the Shoalhaven and Illawarra area and to share ideas and information about living sustainably. I’m looking forward to learning new things and sharing my story. I’m excited to help raise community awareness about the threats to local and global ecosystems, and also raising awareness of what steps we can take in our own lives to live sustainably. I hope that my contribution helps to build a future of positive and ongoing change that so many young people want.
